Reports: Manchester United set to fight Liverpool for Borussia Dortmund superstar
What's the story?
While the clubs are focusing on who to get in this month, Jose Mourinho already has plans for the summer transfer window. The Red Devils have already been linked with Mesut Ozil and just recently, offered Arsenal a player+cash deal for Manchester City target, Alexis Sanchez.
United's rivals, Liverpool, on the other hand, are desperately looking to replace Philippe Coutinho and have kept tabs on Christian Pulisic. According to the Independent, Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Liverpool's interest. Should Jurgen Klopp's side make a move for the winger, Mourinho will make a counter-offer for the American international.
Speaking to Independent, Pulisic reiterated the fact that he would like to continue playing regular football. "I am playing every week in the Bundesliga, in the Champions League, against top teams,” he says.
“When you do that every week, you are going to improve. When you play against the best players, you’re going to grow. I’m learning a lot: tactically, technically, gaining strength.”
In case you didn't know...
Klopp handed the 19-year-old Pulisic his debut in Dortmund, back when he was in charge. Liverpool even tried to sign him in the summer only to see their 2 bids being rejected by the German club.
The heart of the matter
Ever since the departure of Coutinho, Liverpool have stepped up their interest in the American winger. Klopp would want to reunite with the player and have him play under him once again. Money is not going to be a problem but Manchester United will be.
Jose Mourinho was targetting Ivan Perisic in the summer and was desperate to bring him at the Old Trafford only to see the winger sign a new contract with the club. He now believes that Pulisic can fill his shoes and would fancy having him play at the club.
United are ready to offer cash + player, Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the winger. It is believed that Mkhitaryan is unhappy with irregular game time and would be open to leaving the club.
Pulisic would be a great addition to either of the clubs. Both the clubs could use a player like him.
However, as the player mentioned, he would like to play regular football and moving to either of the clubs will not help his cause. Maybe at Liverpool, he could get more playing time than at United because of Klopp. But it is up to him to decide.
