Reports: Manchester United step up interest in Milan & Netherlands Nigel de Jong

Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong

Manchester United are weighing up bids for Nigel de Jong and Stefan de Vrij, writes the Daily Star.

Louis van Gaal is in the market for a deep-lying defensive midfielder this summer and has pinpointed De Jong as a potential fit.

The former Manchester City enforcer, who now plies his trade for AC Milan in the Serie A, is valued at £10 million.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils are said to have increased their efforts to secure the signature of highly-rated Feyenoord centre-back De Vrij.

As with De Jong, De Vrij is currently on international duty with Netherlands at the World Cup, which has given Dutch boss Louis van Gaal the perfect opportunity to track their progress.

In an attempt to further step up their recruitment process, United sent a 10-strong scouting team to Brazil to try and unearth any hidden gems from the quadrennial tournament.

Elsewhere, United have rebuffed approaches from Burnley and Wigan for their youth striker James Wilson.

Van Gaal is said to want to observe Wilson in training before he makes a decision on the youngster’s future at Old Trafford.
