Reports: Manchester United to make stunning January move for €79m winger

West Bromwich Albion v Chelsea - Premier League
Will Pulisic help Mourinho become no.1 again?

What's the story?

Manchester United may have gifted Leicester City an early Christmas present over the weekend, but are doing all they can to bring back some festive cheer to the red half of Manchester.

A large part of this is due to the fact that Jose Mourinho is reportedly unhappy with the talent at his disposal - chiding their childish attitude and generally not giving a toss about Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

That, then, has resulted in United scouting the market for a right-sided winger to go with the pace/trickery of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial on the other side and if reports in the Sun are to be believed - and you may like to keep a pinch, nay a fistful of salt ready for this - they have found their replacement in the sensational Borussia Dortmund and United States of America winger Christian Pulisic, who is valued at around £70 million by the German club

In case you didn't know

Pulisic, just 19, was crowned the States' player of the year - the youngest ever to win the honour - and has grown in stature during the first half of this season. Although his brilliant performances weren't enough to get the US to Russia 2018, the general consensus is that he shone brightly despite the disastrous World Qualification campaign.

He's made 23 appearances for Dortmund this season, chipping in with 4 goals and 1 assist. While the statistics may not jump out at the reader, his performances have given fresh ammunition for those who say that numbers never convey the whole picture

The heart of the matter

United are currently playing Juan Mata on the right wing - having identified that Jesse Lingard and the out-of-favour Mkhitaryan both play better centrally and that both Messrs. Rashford and Martial prefer it on the left - and are looking for someone with a great deal more pace than the classy Spaniard.

Although contracted with the German side till June 2020, Pulisic may be looking for a way out after reports that everything is in shambolic condition within Dortmund's hierarchy and management

Exciting, isn't he?

Author's Take

Pulisic appears to be the perfect long-term solution for a club that's always prided itself on having flying wingers, and pertinently, would be a coup in terms of the commercial angle - with United constantly seeking to grow its presence in the States.
