Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in signing Spanish playmaker Isco from Real Madrid in the January transfer window. Isco's contract at the Santiago Bernabeu runs out in 2018 and he is seen as a viable mid-season transfer target.

Mourinho has so far started Wayne Rooney in the number 10 role but the England captain as failed to perform well. Manchester United is keeping tabs on the £25m-rated midfielder as they look forward to the second stage of Mourinho's squad revamp.

The Portuguese mastermind has already spent almost £150m since joining the United side and is looking to spend another £150m in the upcoming transfer windows.

Isco has fallen down the pecking order during Zinedine Zidane's tenure. New signing Marco Asensio has been preferred by the French manager in absence of Cristiano Ronaldo.

While Isco started the UEFA Super Cup final against Sevilla at the end of pre-season, he has since then found warming the reserve bench. When Zidane was short of options, Isco failed to catch his eye and has just featured in two La Liga games, both times used as a substitute.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder joined the Los Blancos side in 2013 for a fee of £25.8m from La Liga side Malaga. Since then he has scored 15 goals in 99 La Liga appearances for Real Madrid.

While he has been a long-term target of both Manchester City and Arsenal, it was recently it was reported that Tottenham Hotspur was keeping tabs as well.

Manchester United had a strong start to the season winning the FA Community Shield in August and had maintained a perfect record for the first three Premier League games. However, the Red Devils faltered against their neighbours, Manchester City, despite performing well in the second half.

Their decline in form was also evident as they had back to back defeats in Feynerood in a Europa League fixture and at Vicarage Road Stadium against Watford in the Premier League match on Sunday. United have failed to link their midfield to attack and are looking for a player who can thread deft passes to the forwards.

Former Everton forward, Wayne Rooney has started in the said role but has looked increasingly uncomfortable in the position with every match. Isco certainly fits the profile and if the transfer transpires there will be fresh question marks on Rooney's Manchester United career.
