As the Red Devils take the field in pursuit of their 20th League title, here are some of the instances where they have butchered their rivals in the English Premier League.
1) Man Utd 9 – 0 Ipswich Town (4 March, 1995)
Exactly one year before I was born, the Red Devils recorded their biggest win in the English Premier League against Ipswich Town. It was the golden days of Manchester United under Roy Keane who opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Paul Ince (72′) and Mark Hughes (55′, 59′) chipped in as Andy Cole stole the show five five goals in no time. He found the spot at 19′, 37′, 53′, 65′, 87th minutes. However, in spite of such a formidable show, they finished second that season just one point behind Blackburn Rovers.
2) Man Utd 8 – 1 Nottingham Forest (6 February, 1999)
United opened their scoring in February by recording the largest away win in the history of the Premier League. Dwight Yorke opened the scoring for Manchester United in the second minute, turning home Paul Scholes’ right-wing cross after David Beckham‘s corner from the left had evaded everyone in the penalty area. Nottingham equalised through Alan Rogers but the Reds soon found the spot through Cole and Yorke again. But it was Ole Gunnar Solksjar’s day who went on to score 4 goals in 15 minutes after replacing Yorke in the 72nd minute.
3) Man Utd 7 – 0 Barnsley (25 October, 1997)
Andy Cole opened the scoring as he blasted a goal in the 17th minute and then went on to score a hat-trick. Ryan Giggs then appeared on the screen scoring two goals including one superb individual effort. The rest was left for Paul Scholes and Karel Poborsky (55th minute replacement for Beckham) who completed a 7-0 routing of a lowly Barnsley side much to the ecstasy of United supporters.
4) Man Utd 8 – 2 Arsenal (28 August, 2011)
This is the most famous and prestigious win for the Red Devils. Danny Welbeck started off the drama in the 22nd minute with a fantastic goal. A couple of minutes later, Arsenal got an opportunity to equalize, but Robin van Persie misfired from the penalty shot, thus adding to Arsenal’s woes. They were made to pay heavily for their mistake as Young, Rooney and Nani scored in quick succession. Ji-Sung Park chipped in a goal while Rooney made it look easier for United as he went on to complete his hat-trick. The match clearly portrayed the fact that United was the better half of the red jersey!
There’s still lot to go. Let’s see what the future holds for the Red Devils. GLORY GLORY MANCHESTER UNITED!
