Manuel Neuer and Bastian Schweinsteiger declared fit for Germany's opener against Portugal

Germany’s key players have all been declared fit for the Portugal game

Manuel Neuer, the German goalkeeper, and his team mate Bastian Schweinsteiger have been confirmed fit for the opener against Portugal.

"I feel well, fit," the 28-year-old shot-stopper told reporters in Salvador. "I have no limitations in my movements whatsoever. I trained fully with everyone else. I feel well, upbeat.

Neuer damaged the ligaments of his right shoulder in Bayern Munich’s cup win over Borussia Dortmund. His recovery, however, has been rapid claims chief doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt.

Manuel seemed extremely confident when asked how about the coherence of his team and the fitness of the star-studded German line up.

"These injuries are part of football. Nobody wants to be injured but things do happen. It's clear that our leading players have been affected by injuries - Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm, Sami Khedira and also myself. In the last few sessions, we all came together. The most important thing now is that every player on the pitch is 100 per cent fit and that we can play our usual game” said Neuer.

The new Barcelona goal-keeper, 22 year old Marc-André ter Stegen, was set to replace Neuer if his injuries were sufficient to decapcitate his playing ability, but Neuer is sure to start in the lineup for Monday.

On Saturday, Schweinsteiger was airlifted to a hospital to re-examine his knee injury sustained in a training session at South Tyrol, where his fitness was confirmed.

Philipp Lahm had sustained an injury to the ankle in the German cup final. His injury led to discussions about the change in his traditional defensive position of right back. Lahm is now likely to be positioned as a defensive midfielder, which may further weaken the omnious-looking German defense.

"You assume that if you played in one position in the final friendly, you will also play in the same position at the World Cup," Lahm said. "Of course I've spoken to the coach a lot, but it will be up to him to disclose what we discussed. At the end, it's his decision in which position I play."
