England vs Germany: Marco Reus is the man to watch out for

Marco Reus (R) should be a handful for Kyle Walker

Germany coach Joachim Low has confirmed that he will rest some key players ahead of their friendly match with England at Wembley on Tuesday. Low was forced into leaving Sami Khedira out as the Real Madridmidfielder tore his knee ligaments against Italy on Friday. Philipp Lahm,Manuel Neuer and Mesut Ozil will not start either as Low experiments before having to pick his World Cup 2014 squad next summer.

The man expected to replace Arsenal’s Ozil is Borussia Dortmund playmaker, Marco Reus.

Reus played for his country in Friday’s 1-1 draw in Italy with his teammate Mats Hummels scoring Germany’s goal.

The 24-year-old attacker has made a name for being a fierce attacking talent since his move to Dortmund in 2012. In 44 Bundesliga matches for the club, he’s scored 21 goals. He supplies Robert Lewandowski on a regular basis, too, helping the Pole reach the top of the scoring lists in Germany’s top division.

This season, Reus has been just as impressive, scoring seven times in 12 league matches and creating 38 chances – far more than anyone else at Dortmund. Of those 38 chances, he has assisted 5 goals. These figures suggest Germany may not miss Mesut Ozil quite so much.

The attacking midfielder has also collected the most points at Dortmund in Squawka’s Performance Score this season with a mighty 482, pushing him away from second-placed Lewandowski (395).

Earlier in the season, Reus displayed his creativity in a pounding 6-2 win at home toHamburg. He created seven chances in all, completing 76% of his passes.

Marco Reus stats

Reus drifts inside from the left-hand side of the pitch and uses his vision and superb right foot to carve defences open, or simply to take a shot on goal.

England will have to be wary of Reus’ movement inside as that is when he is most threatening. Kyle Walker is allegedly starting at right-back for England so he will need to keep an eye out for his movement inside. Steven Gerrard and Chris Smalling - another who is expected to start – will need to be wary too because if Reus steps inside and is given time and space to pick a pass, England will struggle to prevent the inevitable.

In the same game against Hamburg, Reus completed five of his six take-ons. Most of them happening in central areas – again, his danger area.

His Action Area from the same match also signifies his dangerous tendency to drift inside.

Marco Reus stats

Mesut Ozil is seen by many to be the world’s best playmaker but Reus is not far behind. He was instrumental in Dortmund’s run to the Champions League final last season, scoring four times and assisting four times. One of his goals was an incredibly important one and without it, Dortmund would not have reached the final in Wembley. He scored one of the two late goals to beat Malaga at the quarter-final stage, setting up their unbelievable victory over Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

Germany will pose a threat from all over the field at Wembley on Tuesday evening, but Marco Reus will probably be the one to cause the most trouble. He is the main threat and if England do not deal with him, he will punish them.
