Manchester United‘s new signing Marouane Fellaini attended his first press conference before the Crystal Palace game. This is what he had to say:

“I talked with the manager because it was a big opportunity for me to join one of the biggest clubs in the world. He knew my objectives: I want to win trophies, I play football for this, and with Manchester United I have a big chance to win something.

“I thought I had no chance to join United but in the end I joined the club so for me it’s a dream. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. It’s a big dream.

“I need to work hard for my place because there are a lot of good players at the club. I need to work hard to show [what I can do]. I have a big chance with the manager and the staff. I’ve had a lot of games in the Premier League, I know the players and their quality. I think that’s good for me. Now I need to play and play well for the team – that’s it.

“I will prove myself on the pitch. Some people don’t like my qualities, but I don’t care. The manager, staff and players here know me. The manager gave me confidence [when he signed him at Everton]. I didn’t know anyone, but he helped me.”

Fellaini added: “With Everton and the chairman, we never knew about the deal. Sometimes, I thought there was no chance, but in the end I was so happy to join United. I talked with the manager, because it was a big opportunity to join one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“Of course, United want big players, but the main thing was for me to stay fit and wait until the end of the window. Everton was a great club for me, great team-mates and great moments. I respect the fans but it was time for me to leave.

“I’ve found the intensity of training to be a step up from Everton. United are a big team with big players, and Everton were a great team too. But the difference is that United have won trophies.”

“I can play defensive or attacking – whatever helps the team. The most important thing is to win the game.”
