Roberto Martinez is poised to make a decision about whether or not to stay on as manager of Wigan Athletic, club chairman Dave Whelan revealed on Wednesday.

The pair met to discuss the situation and Martinez told Whelan he would reveal his position on Thursday.

Martinez led Wigan to a shock 1-0 win over Manchester City in this month’s FA Cup final, which gave the modest club from the English northwest their first ever major title.

However, they were subsequently relegated from the Premier League, ending their eight-year stay among the English elite.

“It was a very constructive meeting where we discussed all kinds of things — winning the cup, our relegation, our prospects for next season,” Whelan told the BBC.

“Roberto wants 24 hours to think about what is going on. He wants to speak to his wife, think about it, which I fully understand.

“We are going to meet tomorrow (Thursday) and Roberto is going to make his mind up whether he wants to continue his contract with Wigan or whether he wants to take up a new position elsewhere. Tomorrow is D-Day.”

Martinez is one the favourites to succeed Manchester United-bound David Moyes as manager of Everton and has also been linked with the newly created managerial vacancy at Stoke City.
