Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said that his team’s mentality was the key in their victory over defending champions Manchester United.

“Our mentality was key. We didn’t play as well as we have and Manchester United played some really good football, but our defensive mentality gets better all the time,” he told Sky Sports.

Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of the game at the fourth-minute mark and the result has taken the Reds to the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool is unbeaten in the season with a 100 percent record in both the Premier League and the League Cup.

“The players have been outstanding; we worked hard in pre-season to get this start. We have four from four and we are getting the rewards for how hard we’re working,” said Rodgers.

Liverpool owner John W Henry also shared his joy at the club’s triumph in his twitter account.

“Terrific win; terrific start for the season. What a match! Poised and smart play against United. Team effort, superb desire,” he tweeted.
