Mesut Özil says that Arsenal’s trust in him was a crucial factor in his decision to make the switch

Mesut Özil, 24, says that he didn’t feel he had the complete trust of Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti and that is why he decided to seek a fresh start elsewhere, according to a report on ESPN.

The German midfielder completed a £42.5 million move to Arsenal on a 5-year deal late on transfer deadline day.

Only last week, Özil said that he wanted to stay at Real Madrid, but the situation quickly changed as the Spanish capital anticipated the arrival of Gareth Bale on a world record transfer.

“At that time [the press conference on Wednesday], I was convinced I’d stay at Real Madrid,” Ozil told dfb.tv.

“I soon realised the coach [Carlo Ancelotti] and those responsible no longer placed trust in me. I am a player who needs trust, and I felt that at Arsenal. That’s why I made the switch.”

Özil revealed that it was a conversation with The Gunners’ boss Arsene Wenger that sealed the deal for him, saying:

“We had a long chat on the phone, and he told me about his plans. He trusts me, and that’s what I need as a player.

“Arsene Wenger places his trust in me, and I can further myself. I want to be 100% fit for the World Cup.

“I know what potential I have and I would have come on top at every club in the world, I know that because I am convinced of myself. I am just looking forward to the new challenge and the new coach. I am also looking forward to [playing in] the Premier League.”

Mesut Özil, who will join fellow German internationals Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker at the Emirates Stadium, added:

“I am looking forward to my new team-mates.

“I have already heard about their fantastic fans, the city is great, the team is super class and I am just looking forward to it.”
