Manchester United youngster Michael Keane has revealed that he wants to emulate his idol Rio Ferdinand’s achievements at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old defender spent two successful spells on loan away from the Red Devils during the last campaign at Derby County and Blackburn Rovers, yet remains on the cusp of the first team.

With veteran centre-back Ferdinand and traditional partner Nemanja Vidic having both departed this summer, their is an opening in the team in the centre of defence and Keane has revealed he would relish the chance to replicate the Englishman.

“I hope to take Rio’s shirt. That’s the dream for me. When I was young I always had Rio on the back of my shirt.

“He was my idol when he first joined United and he still is. Luckily, I’ve managed to train with him for a few years.

“It’s sad to see him go. He was a great person to have around in the changing room and he was great with the young lads. He speaks to everyone and always gives you advice,” he told reporters.

New manager Man United Louis van Gaal is set to take the reins at Old Trafford after he has fulfilled his commitments with the Netherlands at the World Cup.

The Dutchman is expected to make a number of changes within United’s under performing squad, which is expected to benefit the highly rated young talent at the club.

Although United are in need of established players and have been linked with a long list of formidable names in regards to their defensive new additions, Keane is adamant he can be given an opportunity to make the grade.

“I still think I’ve got a chance of making it at United. While I still think I’ve got that chance I will stay and try to prove myself.

“I’ve heard the new manager likes to bring young players through and that’s always been the way at United. And obviously, with Giggsy staying on as assistant-manager, then that can only benefit the young players.

“Hopefully we will have a good pre-season and get the chance to prove ourselves. If we do then we’ll have a chance to play,” he declared.

Meanwhile, Ferdinand’s future remains uncertain. He has admitted that he is not ready to retire, but a lucrative move to the MLS is seen as a more likely destination for the former England defender, rather than dropping down a level in England’s top tier.
