Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has urged Rooney to stay at Manchester United, saying that Manchester United is the best place for a footballer to be.

Wayne Rooney reportedly asked to leave the club at the end of the last season and this is the second time that Rooney has asked to leave the club in less than three years.

Phelan told BBC Radio 5 live: “Wayne has proved he is a Manchester United [quality] player. He is good enough to play at the level [he has reached.] Why would you want to jeopardise what you’ve got? An exciting future might be in front of you. He is already at a top, top club. There isn’t a lot for him to go out and grasp that he hasn’t already got.”

Phelan has also claimed that David Moyes and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward would initially want to meet Rooney without his representatives.

“I think he (Moyes) would want to talk to Wayne Rooney and just Wayne Rooney the football player,” Phelan said. “The rest of it is part of Wayne’s backroom team, as such.”

When Phelan was asked about the possible return of Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford, Phelan laughed and said: “No comment!”
