Barcelona are still interested in Aston Villa's new acquisition Amadou Onana, who made the switch from Everton in a £50 million move just this summer.
This is as per a report from Spanish outlet Marca (via Footballtransfers.com) that suggests that the Catalans could reignite their interest in the Belgian midfielder next summer.
The 23-year-old came through the youth ranks at TSG Hoffenheim in Germany before one-year stints with Hamburger SV and Lille. He joined Everton in 2022 for a reported £33 million fee and gained prominence in the two seasons he spent with the Toffees.
Known for his tall frame and ability to play the defensive midfield role at a high level, it was no surprise Aston Villa manager Unai Emery wanted him. However, as per the latest developments, the Villans will have to fight to keep their prized asset from Barcelona's grasp.
Hansi Flick has fielded a mix of La Masia youth products and signings from the past as Barcelona have made a dominant start in La Liga this term, winning each of their five games. However, they could use more depth and recruit Amadou Onana with one eye on the future, considering he is only 23.
The towering Belgian has amassed over 100 appearances in the Premier League, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1, but could be tempted if a club of Barca's stature makes a move for him.
Barcelona enjoy electric start to new La Liga season
Having seen arch-rivals Real Madrid win La Liga and the UEFA Champions League last season, Barcelona and their manager Hansi Flick were under pressure to make a strong start this season. They have done just that and are currently one of the most free-scoring sides in Europe.
As per StatMuse, the Catalan giants have netted 15 non-penalty goals in five outings in La Liga this season. This is three times the number Real Madrid have managed in the same amount of games. The two Spanish giants currently lead the way as Barca are first with 15 points, followed by Atletico Madrid and Los Blancos on 11 points each.
Lamine Yamal (three goals, four assists), Raphinha (three goals, two assists), and Robert Lewandowski (four goals, two assists) have led from the front and will look to guide Barca to silverware this season. The Catalans will travel to face AS Monaco in their opening Champions League match on Thursday (September 19) and will look to make a mark there as well.
