Fans hailed Spain striker Dani Olmo as the best player on the pitch as La Roja beat Spain 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday (July 14). The triumph made Luis de la Fuente's side the first four-time European Championship winners.
After a goalless first half, Nico Williams converted a brilliant ball across the face of the English defence from Lamine Yamal to open the scoring two minutes into the second period.
England boss Gareth Southgate rang the changes, withdrawing captain Harry Kane for semi-final hero Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer coming in 10 minutes later. The changes had the desired effect, as Palmer's brilliant low strike from distance made it 1-1.
However, just as extra time loomed, Mikel Oyarzabal broke English hearts by converting a Marc Cucurella assist as La Roja created Euro history. Meanwhile, fans lauded Olmo - who made a late goalline clearance - for his fabulous outing despite not recording a goal contribution, with one tweeting:
"Dani Olmo best player on the pitch"
Another alluding to Olmo saying about continuing the 'Kane curse', chimed in:
"Dani Olmo really makes it his personal mission to keep Kane trophyless."
There were similar comments from other fans, with Jeffrey Collins posting:
"3 goals and a saving header on the line. Quite a Euro for Dani Olmo."
Phoenix Shine posted:
"Dani Olmo is everything you want in your squad ... playing as a number 10 ... making header sves on the goal line ... He's everywhere."
Orbinho tweeted:
"They should give Dani Olmo the Golden Boot, as that clearance was worth a goal."
Michael posted:
"I never thought I'd be almost happy that Pedri got injured, but here we are. Dani Olmo, monstrous at both ends tonight!"
With 15 goals, La Roja also broke France (14)'s record for most goals at a Euro campaign, set during the 1984 edition, as De Fuente achieved glory with the senior side, having done so with Spain's U-19s (2015) and U-21s (2019).
"He was one of the most dangerous players on the field" - UEFA Technical Observer panel on Spain's Nico Williams winning Euro 2024 Player of the Match against England

Spain winger Nico Williams was adjudged the Player of the Match in the Euro 2024 final win over England in the German capital on Sunday. After opening the scoring, Williams also had a few other presentable openings and looked lively in attack.
The goal made the Athletic Bilbao winger (22 years, 2 days) the second youngest player to score in an Euro final, with the record still belonging to Pietro Anastasi of Italy, who was 20 years and 64 days when he scored in the 2-1 Euro 1968 replay win against Yugoslavia.
The UEFA technical observer panel explained why it chose Williams as the Player of the Match in the Euro 2024 final (via UEFA website):
"He proved very dangerous in attack and was disciplined when he had to defend. He covered Cucurella and linked up well with Olmo in midfield, which proved a combination that posed a lot of threat. He scored a fine goal and was one of the most dangerous players on the field."
Meanwhile, the loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final extends England's 58-year wait for a major-tournament title.
