Jota was travelling in the vehicle with his 26-year-old younger brother Andre, who was also a professional footballer in Portugal's second division with FC Penafiel. Their vehicle veered off the road and caused a fire which engulfed it, as well as nearby vegetation.
Diogo Jota was part of the Liverpool squad that won the Premier League title in the just-concluded 2024-25 season. He appeared 37 times for the Reds across all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing three assists. He was also part of the Portugal squad that was triumphant in the UEFA Nations League Finals last month, featuring in the semi-final and final.
Jota joined the Reds in 2020 from Wolves and has made 182 appearances for the club. He leaves behind three young children and a wife. May their souls rest in peace.
