Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has said that he would want Ruben Amorim to be the Reds' new manager over Roberto De Zerbi.

Jurgen Klopp announced earlier this year that he will leave at the end of the season after a nine-year stint, citing a lack of energy. Hence, the club hierarchy are looking for suitable replacements and many names have been thrown into the mix.

Two names who have been highly linked with the job are Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim and Brighton & Hove Albion's Roberto De Zerbi. Carragher reckons a proven winner like Amorim will be a good fit for the Merseysiders.

“It looks like he’s the favourite right now, I don’t have any inside information, but reading reports that’s what it feels like. Looks like he’s on for the double this season. I think if Liverpool could bring in a title-winner in his last season in his previous job that could be a very good acquisition for Liverpool if it’s Mr Amorim," Carragher said (via The Boot Room).
“I’m maybe more Amorim than De Zerbi,” he added.

Amorim was appointed Sporting CP's manager in 2020 and has since won one Liga Portugal, among other honors. His side are en route to a double this season as they sit atop the league table, seven points above Benfica with five games to go. They will also face Porto FC in the Taca de Portugal final.

Liverpool suffer Europa League disappointment against Atalanta

The Reds beat Atalanta 1-0 in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash at the Gewiss Stadium on Thursday, April 18. Mohamed Salah scored in the seventh minute via a penalty after Matteo Ruggeri's handball in the box. However, having lost the first leg 3-0 at Anfield last week, Liverpool were eliminated from the competition, losing 3-1 on aggregate.

The Merseysiders were also eliminated from the FA Cup quarter-finals by Manchester United but have won the Carabao Cup this season. They now have only the Premier League to compete for as they sit two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Liverpool have three consecutive away games up next in the league as they face Fulham, Everton, and West Ham United. They will return to Anfield to host Tottenham Hotspur before facing Aston Villa away. The Reds will conclude their season against Wolverhampton Wanderers at home.
