According to CNN Portugal's Rui Laura, the 28-year-old had undergone a lung surgery and was advised not to fly. As a result, he decided to travel back to Portsmouth, England, on a ferry after an overnight stop off in Benavente, Zamora. Laura explained (via the Mirror):

"The surgery he had was lung surgery, and he has been advised against flying following this. He was on his way to the northern Spanish port city of Santander to cross the ferry and reach the UK that way, and carry on with the car once he reached Britain. He was on his way to Liverpool with his brother."
