CNN Portugal journalist Rui Santos has heaped praise on Cristiano Ronaldo amid calls for the veteran to be benched for Portugal. Santos believes that the Al-Nassr superstar can still influence games, as he showed in the Nations League win over Germany.
Speaking on CNN Portugal, Santos claimed that fans were not appreciating Ronaldo enough recently, even as he was getting closer to calling it quits. He believes that no player will be able to reach the heights of the Portuguese superstar and said (via Infocul):
"I see the demonstrations of recognition from many places in Europe and in the world for everything that Cristiano Ronaldo still means today, playing, following his performance and influence in the game against Germany, and I say to myself: ok, plurality must exist, that is democracy, but why are the Portuguese those who most contest CR in the national team? Is it for clubism or for minor feelings?
"It doesn't mean that we always have to praise him, because all players, younger or older, have more and less inspired days, but there is one thing I know and defend, even for the injustices that have already been committed against him: we should be proud of Cristiano until the end! And respect for everything he gave, still gives and will continue to give to Portugal. There are very good players in the national team, but I'm almost sure there will never be one like Cristiano Ronaldo again."
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner for Portugal in the 2-1 UEFA Nations League semifinal win over Germany. They face Spain on Sunday, June 8, after the EURO 2024 winners defeated France in their semifinal.
Cristiano Ronaldo told to make history by moving to Boca Juniors
Football pundit Jorge D'Alessandro, on El Chiringuito in May, claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo should leave the Saudi Pro League. He urged the Portuguese superstar to make a surprise move to Boca Juniors and get the Argentine fans to support him. He said (via GOAL):
"It gives me goosebumps... Directing Boca's attack? Boca needs him. He's going to the land of Leo Messi, Diego Maradona and Hugo Gatti... imagine that! Let Riquelme try it, please! I see him more at Boca than at a Brazilian team. He identifies more with a need, also because of his personality, because of the way he plays... That vertigo that Boca has, next to Zenón, next to Merentiel... I'm going crazy!"
Cristiano Ronaldo is in the final days of his contract at Al-Nassr. He has not penned a new deal but reports suggest he was close to a renewal with the Middle Eastern club.
