Designated as hosts of the tournament, Lionel Messi and Inter Miami faced Egyptian outfit Al Ahly at the Hard Rock Stadium. Mascherano pointed out the struggles his side faced before they managed to improve in the game, and he named his captain as a factor.

"They came out well on the counterattack, but afterward, we managed to adjust and hold back the full-backs to have an extra man to get out. Even when we lost the ball, we had the upper hand. But when we found Messi, which we should have found, we did better."

Inter Miami struggled in the opening 45 minutes, with Al Ahly being the better side in this period. The second period brought about a marked improvement from the Herons, with Messi playing a key role as they sought a first-ever Club World Cup win. He started for his side just days after coming off in the second half of the World Cup qualifier for Argentina against Colombia.

Lionel Messi went close with a free-kick before setting up substitute Fafa Picault, whose header was saved by the Al Ahly goalkeeper. The 37-year-old Argentina international also saw a stoppage time effort come back off the frame of the goal as he narrowly missed.

Al Ahly were the better side in the opening half, with Emam Ashour missing a clear chance after just eight minutes. Wessam Abou Ali found the net in the 30th minute but his celebrations were cut short by the referee's assistant, who flagged for offside.

Inter Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari was key for his side as he made eight saves, including one from the penalty spot to deny Trezeguet in the first half. The Herons will take on Palmeiras and FC Porto in their remaining group games as they seek a place in the knockout stages.
