The Netherlands have announced their first XI for their opening game of the UEFA Euro 2024 against Poland on Sunday (June 16). But fans are upset to see centre-back Matthijs de Ligt on the bench.

Drawn in a tough Group D with France and Austria, the Oranje face a tough battle to reach the knockouts. Ronald Koeman is back in the hotseat and will oversee the first major tournament of his second spell as the head coach after finishing runner-up in the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League in his first stint.

Now in his first starting lineup of Euro 2024, the 61-year-old has sprung a surprise by benching De Ligt, the Bayern Munich star who was touted to play a big role in their campaign. Instead, Koeman has picked a centre-back pairing of Liverpool ace Virgil van Dijk and his Inter Milan counterpart Stefan de Vrij.

Fans, though, aren't impressed with the decision, and have made their disappointment known by taking to X, formerly Twitter. One fan termed Koeman, a former Dutch international himself, a "clown", while another one made an emphatic claim that Poland are going to win and claim all three points.

Another echoed the sentiment of Poland's victory, but one user had some good words for De Vrij.

"I see 3 points for Poland," one more fan boldly claimed.
"DE VRIJ IN BIG 2024...." said one fan backing the Inter star.

The Netherlands face off with Poland at the Volkspartkstadion in Hamburg in their UEFA EURO 2024 opener at 1 p.m. (GMT).

The Netherlands haven't lost to Poland since 1979

Ronald Koeman's Dutch side are the favourites, but what gives them a psychological advantage is their terrific head-to-head record against Poland.

The Oranje haven't lost to their central European rivals in over 40 years, last suffering a loss in the fixture way back in May 1979, when Poland beat them 2-0 in a Euro qualifier.

Since then, the Netherlands have gone the next 12 games against Poland unbeaten, winning seven. That includes three wins in the UEFA Nations League, most recently a 2-0 win in Warsaw on September 2022, courtesy of goals from Cody Gakpo and Steven Bergwijn either side of the half.
