Lionel Messi's Inter Miami have been linked with a move for Marcos Rojo

Lionel Messi's Inter Miami are believed to be interested in signing former Manchester United star Marcos Rojo. According to reports from TNT Sports Argentina, the 35-year-old is a top target for the Herons in the upcoming transfer window.

Currently plying his trade for Boca Juniors, Rojo made 122 appearances for United between 2014 and 2021. He also made 61 appearances for La Albiceleste between 2011 and 2019, with 45 of them alongside Messi.

Inter Miami have been long-term suitors of the 35-year-old. They reportedly made an offer after their MLS Supporters' Shield triumph in June 2024; however, it was rejected by the former Red Devils defender.

The Herons still managed to improve their defensive stocks at the start of the 2025 campaign, signing centre-backs Maximiliano Falcon and David Martinez (on loan) and right-back Gonzalo Lujan. Yet, oppositions have exploited their defense, undermining the scintillating offensive display that their forwards have showcased this season.

Led by Messi's 10 goals and five assists in 13 league games, Miami have been the strongest attacking team in the MLS (36 goals scored in 16 games). However, they have also conceded the most goals (27) of any team in the playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

Rojo's experience and composure would add much-needed stability to Inter Miami's backline if they secure his services. Given that he featured in two FIFA World Cup campaigns alongside Messi and the Herons' coach Javier Mascherano, it would also improve the team's chemistry.

"I didn't want to leave" - When Marcos Rojo explained his decision to continue at Boca Juniors despite links to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami

Last summer, former Manchester United and Argentina star Marcos Rojo was linked with a move to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami. However, he turned down the opportunity to continue playing at Boca Juniors.

When asked why he turned the lucrative opportunity down, the 35-year-old said (via GOAL h/t Radio La Red):

"Leo called me, it's not like it was just anyone or an intermediary, no one. I spoke with Leo Messi, who told me about the possibility of going to Inter. Imagine what that means for any footballer. The truth is I was not convinced to leave Boca, I had recently renewed."

"The only thing I did was communicate with Roman (Riquelme) to tell him about the situation and to tell him that if he needed me here I was going to stay. I wasn't convinced to leave, I didn't want to leave. If he told me that he needed me here for this year, I was 100% convinced to continue in Boca and I want to continue doing it," Rojo added.

With the FIFA Club World Cup coming up, Inter Miami have rekindled their interest in signing Rojo. A move for the veteran defender before the tournament would add invaluable experience and depth to the Herons' squad.
