Liverpool fans are paying tribute to late footballer Diogo Jota by laying flowers outside Anfield. The Portuguese tragically passed away on Thursday (June 3) following a fatal car accident.
The incident occurred near Zamora, Spain, after Jota's Lamborghini car steered off the road due to a burst tyre while trying to overtake another vehicle, Reuters report. The car burst into flame just after the crash, killing the player alongside his younger brother, Andre Silva.
Jota's tragic death has sent the football world into mourning, with tributes pouring in from various sections. Liverpool fans have now taken to their home ground to pay tribute to the 28-year-old. They turned up at Anfield to lay flowers and share heartfelt messages for their late forward.
Over in the Midlands, fans of Jota's former club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, also showed up at the Molineux to lay flowers for him.
The former Portugal international made his mark in the Premier League with Wolves. He joined the side from Atletico Madrid initially on loan in 2017 and helped them secure promotion to the top-flight in the 2017-18 season. Three seasons later, Jota signed for the Reds in a reported £41 million deal.
With the Reds, he made 182 appearances, scoring 65 times and setting up 26 more. Jota won the Premier League, two EFL Cups, the FA Cup, and a Champions League runners-up medal. Meanwhile, he recorded 44 goals and 19 assists in 131 games for Wolves.

Liverpool released an official statement following the passing of Diogo Jota. The club confirmed the death of the Portuguese forward alongside his brother, Andre.
"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support," the statement read.
Jota began his senior career with his boyhood club, Pacos Ferreira, before moving to Spain with Atletico Madrid. He also enjoyed a loan spell with FC Porto before switching to England to represent Wolves and Liverpool.
