Manchester United submitted a deadline day bid for Nico Schulz

According to reports by ESPN FC, Manchester United made an audacious bid for Borussia Dortmund wing-back Nico Schulz.

The bid reportedly included a proposed €1m loan fee and an offer to cover his salary for the rest of the campaign.

This offer left Borussia Dortmund board members 'baffled' and had them questioning the credentials of United's recruitment and scouting team.

The Red Devils failed in their quest to buy Jadon Sancho from the Bundesliga side, and this latest gaffe in the transfer market serves as another indictment for those making decisions at Old Trafford.

Manchester United were in the market for a new left-back, and even though they ultimately completed a deal for Alex Telles from Porto on deadline day, the idea that they had considered a player who has not started a Bundesliga match since December is hardly comforting for fans of the club.

A poor transfer window capped off by deadline day influx for Manchester United

Manchester United were widely lauded for the progress they made last season, and were expected to significantly strengthen the squad this summer, but that was not the case.

Despite having the longest transfer window in league history (12 weeks), the United board failed to land their primary target Jadon Sancho. The manner in which Manchester United bundled the Sancho transfer saga is damning.

For the first two months of the window, Donny van de Beek was the only new arrival, and Manchester United began the new season without strengthening key areas of weakness in the team.

Ultimately, the club made forays on deadline day, with four new signings completed with just hours to go.

Free agent Edinson Cavani was the most high-profile arrival, while Alex Telles came in from Porto. United also signed two teenagers in Facundo Pellsitri and Amad Traore.

Other than Telles, none of the other signings was greeted with enthusiasm by fans of the club.

Manchester United have begun the campaign in disastrous fashion, with their porous defence exposed in defeats to Tottenham and Crystal Palace. The fact that the board elected against fortifying the backline suggests that the club might fail in its set objectives this season.
