Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag explained why Antony's much-criticized celebration came about after their FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry. The Red Devils escaped what would have been a monumental shocker as they won 4-2 on penalties.
Manchester United seemingly got the easier draw after they were pitted against Championship outfit Coventry City, but the underdogs put up a strong fight. They came from three goals down to force extra time, nearly winning it at the end before losing on penalties.
Brazilian forward Antony once again struggled to make an impact for the Red Devils after his introduction off the bench, but he found a way to make the news. The 24-year-old was spotted goading Coventry City players after Rasmus Hojlund converted the winning penalty kick in the shootout, sparking widespread criticism.
Erik ten Hag has jumped to his defense, claiming that his celebration was a reaction to the behaviour of the players of the Championship side. The Dutch manager also admitted that the former Ajax man ought not to have celebrated. He said in his press conference ahead of the upcoming Sheffield United game:
"Did you see the reaction of Harry Maguire? He (Antony) was provocated, that's why this was a reaction of that, you haven't seen the provocation only the reaction. But he should not do it."
Manchester United will now play in the FA Cup final for the second successive season, once again facing city rivals Manchester City for the title. They lost to Pep Guardiola's side in last year's final and would be keen to avoid the same fate this season.
Erik ten Hag left sweating ahead of Manchester United league return
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is set to have more injury absentees as his side face bottom-placed Sheffield United in the Premier League.
Star forward Marcus Rashford had to come off in the semi-final against Coventry City as he looked to be struggling with a problem. Similarly, Scott McTominay was substituted off at Wembley.
Ten Hag has now revealed that both players are doubtful for the upcoming match but expects captain Bruno Fernandes to be available.
"Scott McTominay: we have to assess today, really doubtful. Marcus Rashford is also doubtful and there was also an issue with Bruno Fernandes with the hand but I think he can make it. So we have some doubts going into the game tomorrow," he said.
The Red Devils had only one fit senior centre-back for the Coventry game, and look set to continue that way. They will, however, be keen to avoid any problems against the Blades as they look to finish the league season strongly.
