Former Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann has waxed lyrical about Florian Wirtz amid his potential transfer to Liverpool. Hamann believes that the Bayer Leverkusen star is one of the best players in Europe, and he makes his teammates play better.
Liverpool have reportedly agreed a £116 million deal with Leverkusen for Wirtz's services. The reigning Premier League champions will reportedly pay an initial £100m and an additional £16m in add-ons, which could see the German become the most expensive player in British football.
Hamann, who represented the Reds for seven seasons, recently spoke about Wirtz's qualities and why he could be a perfect signing for Arne Slot's side. He opined that the 22-year-old is Germany's best player at the moment, and he makes his teammates perform better due to his style of play.
“I think he’s the best player we’ve (Germany) got and he’s ...well, obviously he won’t be cheap, but I think he’s a player who makes other players better. (Fellow Germany international Jamal) Musiala likes to dribble, he likes to play on his own. But Wirtz is somebody, because if you look at the team now, (Jeremie) Frimpong, I think he’s valued at £40m, he’s coming for, he came to Leverkusen for probably half the money," Hamann said (via Tribal Football).
"And part of the reason why all the team is now worth probably a double of what they were worth before is Wirtz, because he brings them into play. “He’s got a great eye for his teammates, he’s got a brilliant touch, he can finish himself. And he always got an eye for the pass. And obviously, one thing is seeing the pass, the other thing is executing. But he does both.
"For me, he’s in the position; he’s probably the best player in Europe at the moment. And he played in a team that finished, well, they were 16th or 17th when Alonso took over. So they end up winning the league the season after, this year they finished second," he added.
Hamann added that Wirtz would be a success at Liverpool because he is a player who takes care of himself and is not afraid of a challenge.
“And part of the reason, or the biggest reason, is Florian Wirtz. And if he comes to a team, which is even better than Leverkusen, I think it could be a perfect match. And I don’t think it will take too long, if he does come here, which I think he will, before the punters love him here.
“And the thing, why I think he will be a success, is that he can look after himself. He’s like a street kid. So he won’t shirk a challenge. "He will be looked after by his teammates, I’m pretty sure, because he will be one of the main players next season. But if he needs to, he can look after himself. And he won’t be worried, he won’t be afraid of any physical presence shown against him," Hamann concluded.
Florian Wirtz notably helped Bayer Leverkusen to the league title and DFB Pokal in the 2023-24 season. In 197 games for the club, he has recorded 57 goals and 65 assists.
Spanish giants interested in signing Liverpool defender - Reports
Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool defender Andy Robertson this summer. As per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the LaLiga side wants to rope in an experienced left-back and have identified the Scot as a potential target.
The reports added that Robertson is open to joining Diego Simeone's side, and both parties have met over a potential transfer. Robertson's rumored move away from Anfield comes amid Liverpool's interest in Milos Kerkez. The Premier League champions are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign the Hungarian left-back from AFC Bournemouth.
Roberston joined Liverpool in 2017 from Hull City. The 31-year-old has since established himself as one of the club's instrumental players, making 342 appearances for the Reds. He has contributed 11 goals and 67 assists in that period, helping the team to multiple major trophies.
