Football pundit Jamie Carragher has predicted that Manchester United will not finish in the top five of the Premier League table this season. At present, the Red Devils are languishing at number 12 with 16 points in 12 games, six points behind top four.
The club recently appointed Portuguese tactician Ruben Amorim as their manager after sacking Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager was in charge for two-and-a-half seasons, winning the FA Cup and the League Cup.
Despite a change in the management, Jamie Carragher believes that the Red Devils will not turn their fortunes. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Liverpool defender revealed that his pre-season prediction that Manchester United would finish fifth was his "biggest mistake." He said (via Manchester Evening News):
"In fifth place, this is the biggest mistake I’ve made in my predictions. I put Manchester United in fifth position. I don’t think there is a chance Manchester United finish in fifth position. I would be very surprised if they finish in the top six. I can’t see that happening.”
Ruben Amorim, who helped Sporting CP win two league titles in four years, has been in charge for just two games so far. His managerial debut was a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town away at Portman Road in the Premier League. In his UEFA Europa League debut against Bodo/Glimt, United came from behind to secure a 3-2 win at the Old Trafford on Novembr 28.
Ruben Amorim opens up about Manchester United adapting to his style of play
Ruben Amorim opened up about the Red Devils adapting to his footballing system after the side's 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt. An Alejandro Garnacho opener (1') and a brace from Rasmus Hojlund (45', and 50') were enough to secure their second victory of this season's Europa League.
After the match, Amorim discussed his new managerial stint and the team adapting to his tactics. He said (via Manchester Evening News):
"It is not a surprise. These are different things. I have to use the names of the players to explain the situation to you guys. I have explained why we had some problems in the first half. It was not a problem with the players; it was about me [and my ideas]. I believe we can play in different systems."
The Portuguese tactician added:
"Sometimes we defended in a 4-4-2 [vs Ipswich]. We have to play in different systems because nowadays teams change their dynamic. I think our structure, the power of this structure, is to change formation in each game."
United's next fixture will be against Everton at home on December 1 before they take on Arsenal on December 5 at the Emirates Stadium.
