Tim Sherwood has named Marcus Rashford as the Manchester United player who could become a superstar under new head coach Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils signed the Portuguese coach earlier this month, and he only just managed his first game at the helm, facing Ipswich Town on the weekend.
However, it ended in a 1-1 draw. The Red Devils were widely expected to see off the relegation candidates at Portman Road on November 24. They were unable to do so, despite Marcus Rashford scoring an early goal (2'). Just before half-time, Omari Hutchinson scored the leveler (43'), and neither side could find the net again.
However, Rashford's goal gave Tim Sherwood something to talk about, with the pundit believing in the academy graduate's readiness for superstardom. In a conversation with Ladbrokes, Sherwood said (via Metro):
"...Amorim has got an opportunity here, to spark someone into life, and I think he will… and that’s Marcus Rashford. I’ve said it before, but I think Marcus Rashford has the tools to play for the best teams in world football. I’m talking about his capabilities; he could absolutely do it for the best teams in the world.
"But sometimes he loses his way, or something happens, and he just has too many off days, and doesn’t have the level of consistency... I think that if Marcus Rashford can work, and get a chemistry with Ruben Amorim, we could end up with a completely different player to the one we’ve seen in recent years..."
Sherwood continued:
"We need to see consistent performances, and someone like Marcus, with his ability, and his pace, and the goals we know he can score, is someone I think Amorim will really be excited by.
"Man United fans might say many managers have tried and haven’t been able to do it, but if I’m Ruben Amorim, going in, and assessing that team, I’d be looking at him as a project. I think he could make Marcus a superstar. I really do believe that..."
Marcus Rashford scored 30 goals in the 2022-23 season under Erik ten Hag, but he has since failed to deliver a similar output. This season has been something of a struggle, as he has scored just two goals in 12 Premier League games for Manchester United.
Ruben Amorim expects to "suffer a little bit" after Manchester United's draw against Ipswich
Leaving Portman Road with a draw against Ipswich was not on Ruben Amorim's to-do list for his first match in Manchester United. The Portuguese coach hoped that Manchester United would get better next year, rather than immediately (via The Guardian):
"Next year, in the same stage, we will be here with the same problems or we start now … we risk a little bit, we suffer a little bit and in the next year we will be better."
Indeed, Manchester United seemed to struggle against Ipswich, who were widely expected to lose that Premier League clash. Despite scoring first, the Red Devils stumbled and did not provide much more attacking impetus. They had 11 shots at goal with just four on target, with Ipswich had 11 shots with six on target.
However, the hosts missed three big chances, which could have ended the game as a loss for Manchester United.
