Abuja (Nigeria), Feb 3 (IANS): Nigeria’s ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged their national football team to win the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as they tackle the ‘Elephants’ of Cote d’Ivoire Sunday in the quarterfinals in South Africa.

Spokesperson for the party Olisa Metuh urged the Super Eagles in a statement to win the tournament. According to him, the party is proud of them for having qualified for the quarterfinals.

Metuh congratulated the team for getting to the quarterfinals after beating Ethiopia 2-0 last Tuesday. He said PDP had been praying that the Super Eagles should get to the final and lift the coveted trophy for the third time. Nigeria won the trophy in 1980 in Lagos and in 1994 in Tunis.

Metuh added that the PDP were proud of the Super Eagles and the team should strive to make the nation proud by winning the trophy. He urged Nigerians to continue praying for the team.
