After 120 games representing Die Mannschaft, Bastian Schweinsteiger has retired from international duty. The Manchester United midfielder announced his retirement on a post from his official twitter handle. The 31-year old thanked his Coaches and teammates, bringing an end to a glorious career with the national team.

The ex-German captain played his last game for the national team against France in the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championships 2016. In the game, Germany lost 2-0 after Schweinsteiger gave away a penalty in the first half. "Joachim Loew knew how much Euro 2016 in France meant to me because I wanted to win this title that has not brought to Germany since 1996, but it is not to be and I have to accept it," said the 31-year old.

He has appeared in four UEFA European Championships and three FIFA World Cups for the national team winning the gold in his last one. In the finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Bastian Schweinsteiger was arguably the best performer on the field despite Mario Gotze winning the man of the match trophy for his goal.

The German legend’s Manchester United future seems doubtful as reports suggest that Jose Mourinho does not see Bastian in his plans for the future of the club. He has attracted interest from PSG among other teams.
