Veteran midfielder Michael Carrick has signed a one-year contract extension at Manchester United. There were several reports that he might leave the club after his contract had run out in the summer but the club have confirmed he is staying on.

It is quite clear that Jose Mourinho wanted the player at the club and there were several sources that stated he had been offered a contract a few weeks ago and now we can confirm that the former Tottenham man has agreed to the terms put on the table.

Carrick signed for United in 2006 and has spent 10 years at the club. Despite the Red Devils not being able to achieve their basic objective of Champions League qualification Carrick was an important part of the midfield during the 2015/16 campaign

The club stated on their official website manutd.com that Carrick’s extension is until June of 2017. Both the player and Mourinho himself have released official statements on the website after the news was confirmed

The 34-year-old expressed his joy after signing:

“This great club has been a part of my life for the past 10 years, so I am delighted that this incredible journey is continuing. It’s great to have the opportunity to work under José Mourinho, who has achieved so much during his managerial career. I would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support. Winning the FA Cup was a special moment and, hopefully, we can go on to win more trophies in the future.”

Mourinho had wonderful things to say about Carrick and explained his importance to the side

“Michael is a very intelligent midfielder and a great reader of the game. I am pleased that he will be extending his contract. His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever. Michael has a wealth of experience from his many years at the club and that knowledge will be invaluable to me. I am really looking forward to working with him.”

Carrick has won 5 Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and a Champions League during his time with the club
