What's the story?

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who was a hero of the golden era at Old Trafford, has credited the club's interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for bringing back the culture and identity that has been missing at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure.

In case you didn't know...

The Red Devils endured a torrid few months under former boss Jose Mourinho at the beginning of the campaign. Following rifts with players and an array of disappointing results, it took a 3-1 defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool to sack the 55-year-old from his position.

Since Solskjaer's arrival, United appears to have had a revival of sorts, going on to establish twelve victories and two draws, with the only defeat coming during the Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash against Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer's stint so far has seen the Red Devils climb up an eleven-point deficit to challenge Arsenal for a top four finish.

The heart of the matter

Schmeichel, who led United to win the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final to complete the treble, has expressed joy at seeing his former side get back to winning ways, crediting their new boss for the resurrection.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former goalkeeper said, "It's been really good to have this Manchester United mentality, culture, identity back at the club. You only have to look at the results to see how important that has been."

"You can argue it's a free ride for him because he's there on a short-term basis and he's going to be evaluated for the job on a permanent basis. But you know he can go on and he can set his team free, go and attack, go and have fun, commit people forward and try to score goals.

"That's a tiny bit easier when you have nothing to lose. If you lose a game you don't lose your job because you are only there as it is now on a temporary basis. But he's put himself as a front runner [for the permanent manager's job] for sure, he has done incredibly well," said Schmeichel.

What's next?

United will hope to surpass Arsenal in the race for top four when they face Southampton tomorrow night.
