What's the story?

Manchester United have had some very famous 'number 7s' in their long and glorious past. Right from George Best to Cristiano Ronaldo, the very best players for the Red Devils have always worn the famous '7' jersey.

Paul Pogba, when asked recently by Daily Metro as to who his favourite number 7 was, replied:

"His style of playing, his goals – he's iconic in Manchester. When you look at the No. 7, you put his name straight away – David Beckham.

"The way he had control of the ball, his free-kicks, his passing. If he wanted to pass the ball there, you knew it was going to go there – so he's a legend."

While there is no doubting David Beckham's class, one might have expected Pogba to pick either Cristiano Ronaldo or his countryman Eric Cantona. Both Cantona and Ronaldo helped Manchester United assert their dominance and were vital in establishing Sir Alex Ferguson's legacy as the greatest club manager ever.

However, David Beckham also played an important role and won an incredible 12 trophies during his senior career at Old Trafford.

The heart of the matter

Considered by many to be one of the greatest free-kick takers of all time, Beckham's crossing, vision and charisma soon made him the poster boy of both Manchester United and the England national team.

Known for his incredible passing and crossing skills, Beckham's journey at Manchester United ended when he made a highly publicised transfer to Real Madrid in 2003.

Beckham is a Manchester United legend and one can see why Pogba picked him to be the best number 7. However, with the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo also wearing the famous jersey, the choice of Beckham by Pogba seems to be slightly surprising.
