Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes that new boss David Moyes is still unsure of his best team, despite being nine months into his Old Trafford career, report the Mirror.
The Red Devils have endured a disastrous campaign under the Scot with the side languishing in seventh place in the Premier League table and unlikely to qualify for European competition next season.
The ill feeling around the club was compounded last night,as United were soundly beaten by their fierce rivals Manchester City 3-0.
However, Scholes, who enjoyed a fantastic trophy laden career with the club, has insisted that Moyes has had to work in challenging circumstances and needs to be given time to discover a winning formula, as part of the responsibility for a downturn in displays must be shouldered by the players.
“It’s difficult for a new manager coming in. He needs time to get to know his players and I think a big problem is that he doesn’t know his best team yet.
“The players haven’t helped in that way because they’re not playing in the way they should do and that makes it even harder for the manager to find his best team.
“Away from home, I don’t think they’ve been too bad at all – without the Man City defeat and the Chelsea defeat they’ve done really well away from home. The problem has been at home.
“Moyes is only nine months into the job, though. You have to stand by him. Okay, he’s made a couple of signings that haven’t quite worked out yet, but in the summer he’s going to need backing, there’s no doubt about that,” he insisted.
Meanwhile, Scholes also hinted that the new boss could have been given more support by the club’s hierarchy during last summer’s transfer window, which was heralded as a failure in most quarters, with Marouane Fellaini the only significant arrival.
“Was he backed as well as he could have been last summer? I’m not too sure. But this summer, he has to be backed – and I think he knows he needs players.
“It looks to me like there’re a few areas that need addressing. You could say that they’ve been looking for a central midfielder for quite a few years now, and maybe haven’t quite come up with the answer,” Scholes declared.
With a dramatic overhaul of the squad Moyes inherited from Sir Alex Ferguson expected, the former England international believes there are two key areas that need to be strengthened if United are to compete for silverware next season.
“Defensively as well - Vidic is going, it looks like Rio (Ferdinand) and maybe (Patrice) Evra are going as well, so that’s three of your back four. That’s another area he’s got to look after.
“I think going forward we’re alright, with the quality of van Persie, and Wayne Rooney, and Mata – in his right position. It’s probably midfield and defence where we need to look,” he said.
