Players Manchester United must target in January

It’s almost New Year, and the transfer window is back open on January 1, 2014. Manchester United faced a torrid summer in the transfer window, and must look to rectify the mistakes made in the summer.

However, the winter transfer window isn’t the best time to splash the cash, as most players are reluctant to leave their clubs, and those who do leave are ridiculously overpriced. Nevertheless, these are the players that United must target to at least finish in the top 4.

Fredy Guarin

Age: 27

Height: 1.84 m (6 ft 1?2 in)

Playing position: Midfielder

Current Club: Inter Milan

Market vale: 12 million pounds

The man to solve the midfield problem for Manchester United, Fredy Guarin. A perfect replacement for Paul Scholes. He’s a combative, strong, goal scoring, central midfielder. The fact that his club, Inter Milan, aren’t playing in any European competition at the moment, means that Guarin is also eligible to play for Manchester United in the Champions League.

His price of 12 million pounds is another plus point. Seems perfect, doesn’t it? Except, Chelsea are a step ahead. They’ve already contacted his agent, and are willing to pay the price tag. His move to Chelsea is as good as done. Another midfielder that has probably slipped through United’s fingers.

2. Wesley Sneijder

Age: 29

Height: 1.70 m (5 ft 7 in)

Playing position: Attacking midfielder

Current Club: Galatasaray

Market value: 10-20 million pounds

This one is a fairly long shot. Sneijder seems to be happy at Galatasaray and is paid well by the club’s rich owners. Not to mention, he is adored by the club’s fans. But with a World Cup upcoming at the end of the current season, it’s possible that Sneijder will move to pastures new in search of more competitive football. The Dutch maestro can play at either as an attacking midfielder or as a deep lying playmaker. He’s been linked to Manchester United for quite some time, but the move never materialized.

3. Koke

Age: 21

Height: 5′ 10″ (1.77 m)

Playing Position: Attacking midfielder

Market Value: 25-20 million pounds

Atletico Madrid ace Koke has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford over the past couple of months. However, this move is highly unlikely to happen. Why? Because Atletico Madrid are in the next round of the Champions League, this is a World Cup year and he is unlikely to risk a move and disrupt his form, and arguably, Atletico Madrid are a better club to be at than Manchester United at this moment in time. The general problem for Manchester United seems to be that their targets aren’t attracted by the prospect of playing for Manchester United. Thus, this move is also another long shot for Manchester United.

4. Ander Herrera

Age: 24

Height: 6′ 0″ (1.82 m)

Playing Position: Central midfielder

Market value: 30 million

Here we go again. Only months ago, Herrera was strongly linked to a move to Manchester United. So much so, that on the final day of the transfer window, United fell seconds short of completing the move. However, it turned out that the people trying to sign Herrera weren’t representing Manchester United, but instead, were impostors. If United trigger his release clause, this move is certain to happen. But there’s been no rumours linking him to United right now. But keep your ears and eyes open, of all the possible players United can target, this is the only attainable player for Manchester United.
