Mesut Ozil was handed a bumper contract at the start of the year which sees him earn in excess of 300,000 per week. However, his performances haven’t been nearly as consistent since the turn of the year.

Under Emery, the German has started only a handful of games with him missing the Gunners’ most recent big games against Spurs and Manchester United due to injury. However, when he returned to fitness against Southampton, he still found himself warming the bench while he was completely ignored for the Carabao Cup tie.

To add fuel to the fire of a rift, there have been numerous reports doing the rounds, implying that Emery might just have lost patience with the German’s lackadaisical attitude. Moreover, his explanation of not using Ozil due to tactical reasons left a lot to be desired.

Unai Emery has enjoyed a solid start on the pitch with him exceeding many expectations.

However, in handling the Ozil saga, he has his first ‘off the pitch’ test on his hands. And it’s safe to say that the Spaniard hasn’t always provided the reassuring answers the Arsenal faithful have been looking for.

A game against a struggling team at home would represent the perfect occasion to ease Ozil back into action. Yet, if Emery has indeed lost patience, the German could find himself freezing on the bench for another week, at least.
