There has been a stagnancy about Everton over the last two decades, as despite being the biggest club outside of the Champions League regulars and showing signs of promise both on and off the field, the club has somewhat underachieved much to the chagrin of fans.

Two seasons ago, they were one of the biggest spenders, parting with excess of £200m to bring in nine new players to the club, but finished in a disappointing eighth position having flirted with the bottom places at some point in the campaign.

Last season, Richarlison was brought in for a club-record fee of £50m, in addition to other stalwarts like Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne, but the club once again finished in eighth position.

During the summer, The Toffees saw their record-breaking bid for Wilfried Zaha hit the rocks, but they still managed to bring in Alex Iwobi, while the highly-rated youngster Moise Kean was also added to the squad, as well as Andre Gomes' loan move being made permanent.

Having finished outside of the top places for years on end, fans of Everton are within their right to expect much better from their team and with neither Chelsea nor Manchester United looking particularly inspiring at the moment, the Merseysiders could be on hand to take advantage of any slip-ups.
