Protest in Sao-Paulo against FIFA World Cup, cops use tear gas

Clashes at Sao-Paulo threatens to mar the tournament

Police in the Brazilian city Sao-Paulo have used tear gas to dispose off protestors who had gathered to protest against the 2014 FIFA World Cup. A Protestor and a CNN journalist were injured during the clash.

Protestors had planned to move closer to the stadium where the Opening Ceremony is going to be held. The protestors have also planned to protest in different parts of the city at the expense of hosting of the tournament.

A TV footage showed Sao-Paulo police using tear gas and rubber truncheons to disperse about 50 protesters near a metro station on the route to the Arena Corinthians.

The demonstrators had been chanting "there won't be a Cup".

CNN presenter Alex Thomas had tweeted that producer Barbara Arvanitidis has suffered a suspected broken arm as she was reporting the riot live.

Last year more than a million people had joined the protest across the country claiming that corruption had kicked in leading to the mega event being hosted. The protestors demanded that that extra money which went into the preparation of the tourney be used for public services and education.

Since then smaller anti-world cup protests have been staged in various part of the country with some even turning violent.
