Current PSV manager, Philip Cocu doesn’t think that this is the right time for highly-rated midfielder Memphis Depay to take the next step in his career by moving to the Premier League.

Depay has been heavily touted as a possible target for Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.

In a recent interview to Dutch outlet Voetbal International, Cocu said: “No one has contacted us and he has a contract [until 2017] here so we should not get ahead of ourselves.”

“I let Memphis know that it would good for him to have another year here. He has only one full season behind him. I think you need a certain foundation before making the next step.”

“That is independent of the qualities that a person has. Therefore, he must stay at PSV at least one more year. There is no concrete interest so I'm assuming he will report for pre-season training later.”

A host of Dutch names have been linked with Manchester United ever since Louis van Gaal was announced to become the next man in charge at Old Trafford.

According to reports from BBC Sports’ Mike Keegan, van Gaal seems to be keen to re-unite with the pacy midfielder, whom he coached during his stint with the Dutch national team.

The 20-year-old was an integral part of the Dutch team that finished third in the recently concluded World Cup in Brazil.

Depay really rose to prominence with his performances for PSV last season, scoring 12 goals in 32 starts in the Dutch Eredivisie.

His performances certainly caught the eyes of van Gaal, who handed him his international debut in October, 2013 and later rewarded his form with a place in the Dutch squad for the FIFA World Cup.

Depay certainly repaid van Gaal’s faith and did no harm to his rising stock. His two goals in four appearances for the Dutch in Brazil was crucial to the Netherlands reaching the semi-finals.

For his performances, Depay was named amongst the FIFA Best Young Player nominees for the World Cup, which was eventually awarded to French midfielder Paul Pogba.
