Major transfers out of Brighton:

Ben White

Let’s be honest, it was only a matter of time. Brighton did well to keep White last summer. But even then, it was clear one of the big clubs would come for him soon. And in came Arsenal. So, why not get a premium price for him? Brighton did just that.

Arsenal opened the bidding at £40 million offer. But Brighton were clear on what they wanted. They valued their player at £50 million, pay it and get him; if not, he stays. It was a bold move to reject the £40 million offer because for a club like Brighton, especially after Covid, it was a huge amount. But their bluffing paid off. Arsenal finched and paid the asking price.

Sure, Brighton are going to miss the player, especially with his academy connection. But it was time to part ways.

Mat Ryan

Mat Ryan was unwanted by Brighton. Sure, he possesses a wealth of experience, but given the length of his contract, he was set to leave the club for free. He was set to join Arsenal, where he spent the last six months on loan. But out of the blue came Real Sociedad, and Brighton managed to make some money out of this deal.

The deal saw the end of Mat Ryan’s four-year stay in England. He was a brilliant servant at the club until he lost his first-team place to academy product Robert Sánchez. Regardless, he should be remembered fondly by the Brighton fans for the service he has given to the club.

Davy Propper

The Netherlands international also left Brighton this season, ending his four stays at the club. Originally joined when Brighton were first promoted to the Premier League, Propper has played a crucial role for Brighton. But under Graham Potter, Brighton are trying to develop a young team, and Propper at 30 doesn’t fit that profile.

He joined his former club PSV for an undisclosed fee this summer. So it will be like a homecoming for the player who impressed at the club during his first spell.

Jose Izquierdo

After making only one appearance last season, it was no surprise that Brighton decided to part ways with the Colombian. But his downfall is not entirely on him; injuries have played their part. He, too, has returned to his former club Brugge on the expiry of his contract.

Florin Andone

After struggling with injury and form, Florin Andone left Brighton to join Cadiz on a season-long loan deal this summer. The Romanian international has never cracked it in the Premier League and has been restricted to just 26 league games in three years at the club. A return to Spain should help him kick start his career again.

While Brighton have managed to get a premium price for Ben White, it is fair to say they haven’t properly invested it. Like Arsenal, Brighton have also signed players for the future, but who will step up into Ben White’s shoes is still a question. Brighton could and should have done more in the transfer window.
