With Lionel Messi already with four Ballon d'Or titles on his resume and Ronaldo with one, the 2013/14 season was an extremely important one for Ronaldo and Real Madrid's quest for La Décima was still in process.

After a disappointing 2012/13 season for Real Madrid, not because of Ronaldo, who scored 55 goals and provided 12 assists, Los Blancos were needed for a fresh start and Ronaldo was the face of the revamp, alongside the new manager, Carlo Ancelotti.

Ronaldo started the year amazingly, scoring goals almost in every game and carrying Portugal to the 2014 World Cup against Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Sweden in the qualifying play-off with four goals in two matches.

His second half of 2013 made him the candidate for the 2013 Ballon d'Or and he got it in January 2014.

Later in that year, Ronaldo continued his great performance in the UCL. After his then-record 9 goals in the group stage, he went on to score eight goals in the knockout phase and establish a new record for a season, with 17 goals.

Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey against Barcelona in mid-April, even though Ronaldo could not play because of an injury. In the UCL final against Atlético de Madrid in Lisboa, Madrid won La Décima in the extra time after a thrilling match. Cristiano scored the last goal for his side after converting a penalty committed to himself.
