#3 Paddy McNair

Paddy McNair transitioned from the Manchester United academy to the senior team in the 2014/15 season. The young defender showed early promise, featuring prominently in the league that season, making 18 appearances in all competitions. The Northern Irishman was another one of the Manchester United academy graduates to have his first-team minutes reduced under Jose Mourinho.

Despite being highly rated and showing a desire to succeed, McNair failed to live up to the standard needed to break into the first team from the academy. He made just 8 appearances in the following Premier League season and was eventually sold to Sunderland come August 2016.

McNair then suffered back-to-back relegations with Sunderland before making the switch to Middlesbrough in the Championship in 2018.

#2 Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

Yet another Manchester United academy graduate, who was handed his debut by Van Gaal, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson's career did not take off as expected.

The defender showed real promise in his debut season, making 14 appearances in all competitions, including a debut in the UEFA Champions League. But he saw his game-time reduced considerably next season.

What followed was a series of loans to the lower leagues of English football with clubs like Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Scunthorpe United, Tranmere Rovers and Oldham Athletic.

Multiple loan spells didn't do the young Manchester United academy graduate any good, with sporadic minutes in each spell. He was eventually shipped out to Oldham on a free transfer. Just recently in July this year he made the switch to Burton Albion in the third tier of English football.

#1 James Wilson

The highly rated Manchester United academy striker made his senior debut for the club in 2014, after some really impressive performances at youth level. James Wilson was the latest up-and-coming talent through the Manchester United academy, making his senior debut with a bang.

The Englishman scored a brace on his debut against Hull City under interim manager Ryan Giggs. Many tipped Wilson to be the next big star to come out of the Manchester United academy.

Two goals in 19 appearances in the following season under Louis van Gaal and the hype quickly fizzled out.

The following season, Wilson was shipped out on loan to Brighton and Hove Albion for regular game time, scoring five goals in a decent spell. But a serious knee injury put him on the sidelines during his loan spell at Derby County.

After a couple of loan moves to Sheffield United and Aberdeen FC, Wilson completed a free transfer to Aberdeen. Just this July, he secured a move to Port Vale FC in League Two in England. Nobody would've predicted Wilson to end up in the fourth-tier considering his sparkling senior team debut.
