The 22-year-old was signed by Real in 2014 from Mallorca, as he was seen as the future of Spanish football, but was loaned out over the next two seasons to gain much needed playing time.

On his return to the club in 2016, Marco still struggled to break into the first team owing to the presence of more established superstars. He did play his part in the odd match or two, including scoring the fourth goal in Real 4-1 victory over Juve in the 2017 Champions League final.

He further announced his capabilities at the start of last season with two cleanly struck goals from outside the box against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup but was still down the pecking order, and there were fears expressed over whether he would achieve his immense potential at Real Madrid.

Ronaldo's departure however always meant that Asensio would be given more playing time down that right flank, and he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

He scored his first ever international goal a fortnight ago against Croatia and opened his account this season with the winner against Espanyol.

Asensio has all the tools to be a great footballer on the field, as well as the marketability required off it, and this could be the season where he truly begins to main event headlines.
