Angel Di Maria accused Real Madrid of not letting him play in the World Cup final

The relationship between Angel Di Maria and his ex-club Real Madrid took a turn for the worse when the Argentine international claimed that the club requested him not to play the World Cup final.

“I got a letter from Madrid that arrived at 11:00 on the day of the [World Cup final] asking me not to play,” he revealed.

“We were playing at 16:00 and I was preparing myself to be in the best condition, knowing that I could have got injured. As soon as I go that letter, I ripped it up. I did not care, no matter what.”

Germany eventually beat Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup, but it was Di Maria who helped the Albiceleste reach the final in the first place. Before the World Cup, he had a terrific season for Real Madrid, bagging 17 assists and helping the club win the Copa del Rey title and their 10th Champions League crown (La Decima).

Di Maria was never on good terms with Florentino Perez

Both club President Perez and coach Carlo Ancelotti claim Di Maria requested to leave the club. But the new Manchester United number 7 says otherwise.

“I never said I wanted to leave Madrid. The club decided to buy other players. I always had a great relationship with my team-mates,” he explained.

Real Madrid had gone on a spending spree by buying World Cup sensation James Rodriguez and German World Cup winner Toni Kroos – both of whom cost a combined €110m.

“I have no relationship with Florentino Perez. When I signed my contract I was not present.”

Ronaldo was on my side, he may leave Madrid soon: Di Maria

The Argentina winger also revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo always supported him. Ronaldo did say that he “would have done things differently” this summer if he was the president.

“Cristiano was always on my side," Di Maria said

“He fought for me to stay. I don't know how long he will stay at Madrid.”

He also spoke about his new challenge, which was to bring Manchester United back among the top clubs in the Premier League.

“I was having a good time in Spain, so the change will have its toll. I have to adapt to my new team-mates, but I hope it will be as quick as possible.

“I want to score goals and get United back to where they should be. I'm very happy to be in Manchester.”
