Has Zizou done one over Lucho in the transfer market before it even opening?

What’s the story?

Marco Verratti has been linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid for quite some time and this summer, both clubs are plotting a move for him. With both the Spanish giants interested, the Italian midfielder had a tough choice to make.

However, Diario GOL are now reporting that Verratti has opted to join Real Madrid over Barcelona. The 24-year-old believes that Los Blancos are building a proper team for the future and wants to be a part of it.

(Disclaimer: Diario GOL report a lot of stuff that is hard to believe, so, take this with a pinch-of-salt.)

In case you didn’t know...

Verratti has been in impressive form ever since he joined Paris Saint-Germain from Pescara in 2012. The young midfielder is seen as the future of their midfield by the Spanish giants as well as other European giants.

The Italian too has been issuing 'come and get me' pleas this season, and his agent has confirmed that he is looking for a move away. “He has been in Paris for five years now, and he has to make a decision, learn a lot and not win or earn and become a champion. It is not a problem of money. Whoever signs Verratti will pay him a lot of money. One thing is certain: if he leaves PSG, it will be for a top European club”, said his agent.

The heart of the matter

Real Madrid have won the race to sign Marco Verratti. The League leaders have also reportedly agreed a £70 million deal with PSG for him. Madrid were looking to replace Luka Modric, who is set for a move to Bayern Munich in the summer. Zidane wanted to sign Verratti at any cost, and now the board has got him his man.

Barcelona saw him as the 'ideal replacement' for Andres Iniesta, who is reportedly on the verge of leaving the club when his contract expires after next season. Chelsea too have been on the hunt for a partner for N'Golo Kante. Despite the Italian saying that he wants to work under Conte, he has decided not to join The Blues' as he wants to play in Spain.

What’s next?

Real Madrid have now secured the signature of Verratti, and he will become their 3rd signing so far! Vinicius Junior and Theo Hernandez have already had their medical at the club, but Verratti's medical and signing will only happen after the season ends.

Author’s Take

Signing Verratti is one of the best things Real Madrid will be doing this summer. Madrid's intent to make the squad better than what it is now and also the pace at which they are signing players is something one has to admire.
