What’s the story?

Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio has reportedly issued an ultimatum to Real Madrid that he could seek a move to the Premier League if his playing situation does not improve at the club. According to reports in Diario Gol (admittedly not the best of sources), the 21-year-old is keen to play regular first-team football week in and out and could move to either Liverpool or Arsenal.

Asensio is one of the foremost young talents in world football at the moment and both Jurgen Klopp and Arsene Wenger are reportedly huge fans of the 21-year-old Spanish attacking midfielder.

In case you didn’t know...

Marco Asensio has put in a number of eye-catching performances this season

Asensio has enjoyed his breakthrough season this year and has impressed one and all with his trickery, dribbling skills, vision and calmness on the ball. Capable of scoring spectacular goals and setting up teammates with equal ease, Asensio is easily one of the most talented youngsters in world football at the moment.

The youngster’s market value is expected to be a massive £50 million, but even a bid of that value might not be enough to convince Florentino Perez and Zidane who both have high hopes for the tricky midfielder.

The heart of the matter

Both Arsenal and Liverpool are determined to strengthen in the summer transfer window and the signing of Asensio will certainly send a statement of intent to their rivals. However, Real Madrid are not a selling club and it is highly unlikely that anything other than a ridiculous bid will even get Real Madrid to consider the offer.

Asensio is behind Isco and James Rodriguez in the pecking order at the moment, but with James most likely to leave in the summer transfer window, Asensio might well be convinced to stay at Bernabeu next season.

What’s next?

Arsenal and Liverpool are currently embroiled in an intense race for a top 4 finish with Liverpool favourites to qualify for the Champions League. Both teams know that they will be able to attract much better players if they make it to the Champions League and will be hoping to finish off the season on a strong note.

Author’s take

While Asensio might be frustrated at the lack of starting opportunities, one must remember he is still only 21-years-old. The Spaniard is one of the most talented footballers in world football and Madrid will definitely do everything in their power to keep hold of their young star.
