Real Madrid wave goodbye to La Liga: Twitter explodes as Barcelona win El Clasico

Real Madrid v Barcelona - La Liga
Barcelona are now 14 points clear of Real Madrid

Barcelona extended their lead in the Spanish La Liga points table after they defeated arch-rivals Real Madrid 3-0 at the Bernabeu on Saturday. The Blaugrana will now go into the new year with a handsome lead at the top of the table and a victory over in the El Clasico away from home. The ideal way celebrate Christmas and New Year, isn't it?

The first half of the game ended 0-0 with Real Madrid's Karim Benzema reaching the closest to scoring a goal when his header hit the far post. However, things took a turn when Luis Suarez opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 54th minute.

About ten minutes later, Dani Carvajal handled (Suarez-esque) a header from Paulinho in the 16-yard box and was sent off as a result. Lionel Messi comfortably converted the resulting penalty.

Real Madrid tried to respond to the two goals by bringing on Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale on. The latter made Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen work, but couldn't find the back of the net. Captain Sergio Ramos also brought out a great save from the German.

It looked like the game was going to end 2-0, but Aleix Vidal joined the party by scoring in the last minute of the game.

Twitter was on fire after the game and here are some of the best tweets on the El Clasico:
