McManaman is among the few successful Englishmen to play abroad. In 1999, he moved to Real Madrid from Liverpool on a free transfer.

The 42-year-old managed 46 goals in his 272 league appearances at Liverpool and went on to become a vital part of a star-studded Real Madrid side at the turn of the Millennium.

The playmaker even went on to win the Champions League in his time at the club, at the time becoming to the first Englishman to win the trophy with a foreign team. He was also the first Englishman first to win it twice.

Eventually the arrival of another Englishman with more pizzazz, David Beckham, took away all the attention in the Spanish capital, which signalled the end of McManaman and he went back to the Premier League to finish his career with Manchester City.
