According to Moscow City hall, the redevelopment work of the Luzhniki Stadium, which will host the 2018 FIFA World Cup final, will be completed by April 2017.
The redevelopment will kick off in early 2014 and will take three and a half years to complete. The stadium which was closed after the World Athletics Championship will have an increased capacity of 81000 seats after the completion of the expansion.
It was confirmed in December by FIFA that the stadium will play host to the first match of the World Cup along with the high prolific final of the tournament. Though the expansion plan is for 81000 seats FIFA earlier issued a permission to expand the capacity to 89,000 seats. But that plan was dropped because it would need the complete demolition of the current venue and build a new one, which was considered too expensive by the Moscow authorities.
