What's the rumour?

The North Londoners are all set to get into a battle away from the pitch as well. According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are monitoring Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back, Matthias Ginter.

In case you didn't know...

Matthias Ginter is a prominent figure in the German international football setup and has already won 23 caps for Die Mannschaft. The 25-year-old joined Borussia Monchengladbach from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017.

His potential suitors, Arsenal, have conceded 36 goals this season which is more than any of the other top 6 clubs including Manchester United who had been having one of their worst campaigns defensively until Jose Mourinho was sacked.

The heart of the matter

Despite bringing in Sokratis from Borussia Dortmund for a reported sum of £17 million, Arsenal's defence has been in absolute shambles all season. After being picked apart on various occasions, the futures of several of their defenders are in question with Shkodran Mustafi being at the receiving end of much ire from the Emirates faithful.

With Rob Holding also being sidelined for a long time, Emery is looking at the summer transfer window with a lot of hope and that's why the Gunners are monitoring Ginter.

As far as Spurs are concerned, Toby Alderweireld is expected to depart in the summer. Despite Spurs extending both Jan Vertonghen's and Alderweireld's contracts by a year each, there is a clause in the latter's contract which will let him leave this summer for £25 million.

Hence, Spurs are also in desperate need of a world-class centre-back and Matthias Ginter fits the bill.

Rumour rating/probability: 8/10

Sky sources are dependable when it comes to transfer rumours and both the clubs mentioned in the report need reinforcements at the back.

What's next?

Joining Spurs or Arsenal will definitely be a step up for Matthias Ginter. He is a sure-footed defender who can thrive in the competitive Premier League.
